If you can stretch the budget, this is the one to get. The updated 2025 design fixed the durability issues of the recalled original, and the 5, 52.5 lb range will carry a beginner well into intermediate lifting.
What holds up
- Replaces 15 individual dumbbells, 5, 52.5 lbs per dumbbell
- Updated metal parts make it more durable than the recalled predecessor
- Smooth dual-dial adjustment mechanism that doesn't get stuck
- Compact storage tray keeps everything organized
What to know
- Expensive at nearly $500 for the set
- Must adjust dial on both sides of each dumbbell
- Round shape can roll and is bulky for some floor exercises
- May be overkill weight-wise for true beginners
The BowFlex Results Series 552 SelectTech Dumbbells are my favorite pair because of their design and sturdiness. The newest upgrades include metal plates, and the dial retains the same design, appearing even smoother this time around.
They're easily some of the best adjustable dumbbells and, I think, a return to a simpler, more durable design.
The budget options like Yes4All spinlocks technically work but after reading about the Bowflex selector mechanism problems I didn't want to risk it. Rather pay more once than deal with broken equipment mid-workout.
