Google Drive / Google One vs IDrive

Google Drive is free-ish because Google's business model is your data. If you're storing tax documents, medical records, or business files, that's not a paranoid concern — it's a documented trade-off. IDrive's end-to-end encryption means even IDrive can't read your files. For most people storing vacation photos, this doesn't matter. For anyone storing anything sensitive, it absolutely does.

IDrive stores your files. Google Drive stores your files AND is the backbone of an entire productivity suite. Docs auto-save to Drive, Gmail attachments land there, Google Photos syncs there, and everything is searchable with Google's search engine. IDrive has no equivalent ecosystem. If you live in Google's world already, switching to IDrive for storage means you're fighting your own workflow every single day.

Google One backs up your phone. IDrive backs up your phone, your laptop, your desktop, and your work computer — all under one plan. For a household with multiple devices or a freelancer juggling machines, this isn't a minor perk, it's a fundamentally different product. Google's model charges you for storage space; IDrive's model actually thinks about backup as a whole-life solution.

IDrive's UI looks like it was designed in 2014 and hasn't had a serious refresh since. It works, but it feels clunky next to Google Drive's clean, fast, modern interface. This matters more than people admit — if the app is annoying to use, you use it less, which means your backups get neglected. Google Drive is genuinely pleasant to use across mobile and desktop. IDrive is a tool you tolerate.
