The Best Deodorants

Updated April 2026·Experts: WIRED, Good Housekeeping, Healthline, Runner's World · Community: NaturalBeauty, Frugal, beauty

Best Overall
$12-$14 at Amazon
Native Deodorant earns loyal repeat users, one commenter noted they only use native now, have for the last couple years, largely praising its shea butter base that makes it super smooth and creamy to apply. However, the community is far from unanimous: a recurring complaint is that it permanently stained shirts and a Mountain Hardwear puff coat due to its coconut oil formula, and multiple users flagged baking-soda-triggered rashes that sent them searching for alternatives. Even fans acknowledge a ceiling on its performance, with one user bluntly stating that unlike aluminum antiperspirant, Native does not go beyond 24 hours very well, making it a solid but imperfect transition for those leaving conventional deodorants.

What holds up

  • 30+ scent options including fun limited editions like Jarritos Watermelon
  • Baking soda + tapioca starch absorb moisture effectively without aluminum
  • Vegan formula free of parabens and phthalates
  • Widely available at drugstores and affordable at ~$14

What to know

  • Can leave white marks on dark clothing
  • Gets gummy if reapplied multiple times without wiping down first
  • Not an antiperspirant, won't stop sweating
Expert verdict
I've been a longtime fan and user of Native deodorant. It's affordable, it's sold at most drugstores, and it works well.

It prevents smells all day, and I love the subtly sweet scent, which isn't overpowering.

I only use native now, have for the last couple years. it's great, no aluminum, tons of scents, highly recommend

Bottom line ★

Native is worth trying if you want an aluminum-free stick with a genuinely smooth, shea-butter texture and broad scent variety available at most drugstores, just apply it daily and keep it away from technical fabrics prone to oil staining.

Best Antiperspirant
$5-$10 at Amazon
Reddit users dealing with hyperhidrosis and heavy sweating consistently turn to Degree Advanced 72H MotionSense as a reliable option, with one South Florida commenter noting they use it after being diagnosed with Hyperhidrosis at a young age and finding its helped a lot. A user in r/hygiene highlighted the product's distinct formulation, pointing out it is the only deodorant I've found in stores that uses a different form of aluminum, making it a practical choice for people with sensitivities to aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex. Those comparing it to pricier alternatives like Carpe found it delivers the same active ingredients for substantially cheaper, reinforcing its reputation as a no-nonsense, cost-effective option for people who need serious sweat protection.

What holds up

  • 72-hour odor and sweat protection claim backed by real-user reports
  • MotionSense microcapsule technology releases fragrance during movement
  • Bargain price, one of the most affordable effective antiperspirants
  • Widely available at drugstores and grocery stores

What to know

  • Contains aluminum, not suitable for those avoiding it
  • Fruity-floral scent is polarizing; some find it too strong
  • Not ideal for those with sensitive skin
Expert verdict
It's advertised as 48-hour protection and it does just that, even after a hike/workout.

Bargain-priced Degree is a great choice for active women thanks to its powerful odor and sweat protection.

All the degree 72 advanced stick deodorants work well. Just find a scent you like. I find that the women's versions have a softer scent that doesn't make you nauseous.

Bottom line ★

Degree Advanced 72H MotionSense stands out because it uses aluminum sesquichlorohydrate rather than the more common aluminum zirconium, offering effective sweat and odor control for people with hyperhidrosis or aluminum sensitivities at a fraction of the cost of specialty alternatives like Carpe.

Best Aluminum-Free for Sensitive Skin
$5-$8 at Amazon
Reddit users have had a strikingly mixed relationship with Dove 0% Aluminum, with some finding it a reliable everyday option, one user noting they use it typically on regular days, while others report troubling side effects. A user in r/Skincare_Addiction warned that the discoloration began after about a week of use, leading them to discard the product entirely, and another in r/Skincare_Addiction described burning sensations tied to the formula's zinc neodecanoate. Perhaps most critically for those switching from antiperspirants, a r/NaturalBeauty user who tested multiple aluminum-free alternatives found that with Dove 0%, they eventually don't stink later in the day, ultimately abandoning it for a competing brand.

What holds up

  • Moisturizing formula with glycerin soothes sensitive underarm skin
  • Glides on smoothly with no white residue on clothes
  • Wide range of scents with long-lasting staying power
  • Budget-friendly and widely available

What to know

  • Some shoppers find the scents smell too synthetic
  • Not an antiperspirant, won't prevent sweating
  • Odor protection may not hold up for heavy sweaters
Expert verdict
Dove is practically synonymous with moisture and this aluminum-free deodorant is no exception. Its moisturizing ingredients soothe the sensitive area, preventing irritation and redness.

This is my favorite deodorant. It keeps my sensitive skin smooth, protected, and it has an amazing long-lasting scent that stays all day and night.

I only used this deodorant for 2 weeks, the discoloration began after about a week of use, and now I discarded it. I am no completely turned off on all dove deodorants now.

Bottom line ★

Dove 0% Aluminum works as a low-effort, skin-familiar daily deodorant for those who don't sweat heavily, but anyone prone to skin sensitivity or expecting all-day odor control should test it cautiously before committing.

Best Clinical Strength
$8-$14 at Amazon
Reddit users have a nuanced relationship with Secret Clinical Strength, many swear by its effectiveness, particularly when applied at night, with one r/hygiene commenter noting it works better for me, especially if applied before bed. For some, it has become a decade-long staple, though frustration creeps in as loyal users report they keep discontinuing my favorite scents. The cost is a recurring sticking point, one r/AskWomen user candidly admitted it was sooooo expensive before switching back to a standard antiperspirant with comparable results. Still, for those dealing with serious sweat and odor concerns, the higher aluminum concentration keeps it in a category where, for some, clinical strength is the only deodorant that works.

What holds up

  • Clinical-strength formula with 25% more aluminum than standard Secret
  • Up to 48-hour protection when applied at bedtime
  • Clean, fresh scent that isn't overpowering
  • No adverse skin reactions reported by testers with sensitive skin

What to know

  • Contains aluminum, not for those avoiding it
  • Requires bedtime application for maximum effectiveness
  • Not a complete sweat stopper, reduces but doesn't eliminate sweating
Expert verdict
It's not a magic cure to stop all sweating, but it does provide me with strong enough protection for daily use.

We found this standard roll-on bar to be the most effective bar we tested. It reduced her sweating all day, didn't need to be reapplied after a workout, and caused no adverse reactions.

I use secret clinical and it works better for me, especially if applied before bed. (I shower at night, not in the morning)

Clinical strength is the only deodorant that works for me. I use secret but im trying to find a different brand mc im tired of the scents
r/hygieneView source
Bottom line ★

For anyone who struggles with sweat-related embarrassment and has found regular antiperspirants falling short, Secret Clinical Strength earns its place as a long-term daily essential, with users sticking with it for over a decade specifically because nothing else delivers the same reliable dryness, especially when applied before bed.

Best Whole Body Deodorant
$15-$22 at Amazon
Reddit users are sharply divided on Lume Whole Body Deodorant, with experiences ranging from loyal converts to cautionary tales. Some swear by its odor control across the whole body, one user noted that after switching (and starting to work out pretty heavily) it works super well, while another's partner will only use it now after struggling to find deodorants that work. But the product's chemistry doesn't agree with everyone: at least one user reported a rash all over requiring two months of doctor visits, and another found it altered my body chemistry so I smelled worse than ever, even through the Lume. The consensus is that Lume is highly body-chemistry-dependent, a genuine solution for some, a frustrating misfire for others.

What holds up

  • Designed for whole-body use: underarms, under-breasts, feet, groin
  • 9 scent options plus unscented; available as stick or cream
  • pH-balancing mandelic acid is anti-fungal and helps with acne
  • Over 57,000 five-star Amazon reviews

What to know

  • Initial scent can smell unpleasant due to mandelic acid (fades quickly)
  • Didn't stretch as long as the brand's 72-hour claim in some tests
  • Cream formula requires finger application, which some find inconvenient
Expert verdict
It seemed very effective, and the tube allowed me to apply liberally and to use it all over my body. Plus, it did not stain my clothing!

I am pleasantly surprised at how well this works! This one actually keeps that under-boob (and other parts) dry!! This will be perfect for summer.
Amazon reviewer via Good HousekeepingView source

I use a regular gel antiperspirant/deo underarms and the Lume under my boobs, apron belly, and thigh creases and this works really well for me. With the old formula, it does smell a bit like playdoh coming straight out of the tube, but that smell dissipates fairly quickly and doesn't transfer onto your body.
r/PlusSizeView source
Bottom line ★

If your body chemistry is compatible, Lume can replace conventional deodorant entirely, even through heavy workouts, but the risk of skin reactions and a polarizing base scent make it worth patch-testing before committing to full-body use.
