Canary's AI writing and advanced encryption require a paid subscription, which means you're committing to an ongoing cost for an email client. Over two or three years, that adds up to real money for features that only a subset of users will actually use daily.

Canary ships with end-to-end encryption that actually works out of the box, which is rare. Thunderbird supports encryption, but setting up PGP manually is a multi-step process that will defeat most non-technical users before they finish. If you're sending anything genuinely sensitive, Canary removes the friction that makes encryption a feature people intend to use but never actually do.

Decades of open-source development means Thunderbird has hundreds of community-built extensions — calendar sync, advanced filtering, CRM integrations, custom themes.
