Every Reddit thread on litter mats eventually lands here. The honeycomb design is the only style where the litter physically falls away from the surface instead of just sitting on top waiting to be kicked around.
What holds up
- Dual-layer honeycomb design traps litter in bottom layer instead of letting it sit on top
- Top layer lifts off so trapped litter can be dumped directly back into the box
- Soft foam material is comfortable on bare feet
- Works well even with fine-grain litters like clay
What to know
- If cat pees or vomits on it, honeycombs are extremely difficult to fully clean and usually need to be tossed
- Some cats try to jump over it rather than walk across it
- Cheaper versions arrive with a permanent crease in the middle that never flattens out
Honeycomb double layered litter trapping mats have been most effective for me. That said, no litter mat makes a significant difference in my opinion.
the best mats are the ones with a honeycomb / double-layer design. basically, the top layer has holes that let the litter fall through, and the bottom layer traps it so you can just pick it up and dump it back into the box. they're usually made of a soft foam material that's easy on bare feet too.
