Microfiber Bath Mat

The cheapest and most washable litter mat solution — a standard microfiber bath mat outperforms most purpose-built litter mats at a fraction of the cost. Shake it out, toss it in the wash, done.

$10-$20
Pros
  • Machine washable — can be cleaned properly unlike most litter mats
  • Shaggy pile texture brushes litter off cat paws as they exit the box
  • Much cheaper than dedicated litter mats ($10-$20 vs $30+)
  • Available in large sizes to cover more floor area
Cons
  • Holds onto cat hair more than rubber or foam mats
  • Doesn't trap litter as deeply as honeycomb designs — litter sits in pile
  • Cats with urinary issues may pee on soft fabric mats
Why we recommend it

Multiple Reddit threads independently arrive at the same conclusion: a $10 microfiber bath mat beats $30 litter mats. The shaggy texture physically brushes litter off paws, and you can actually wash it.

What the community says

Try a microfiber bath mat. It's cheaper, easy to shake out, can be washed and does a great job at preventing tracking. Actual litter mats are way overpriced and do very little imo

The best mat I've found is just an old bathroom rug with a fairly high pile. Tried it on a whim and it works better than any litter mat I've tried.

Thirding the bathroom mats as long as you're not looking for the perfect solution: they capture most of the litter, they shake out pretty well and you can throw them in the wash.

If you're up for it you may want to try the kind that has more of a shaggy material so it sort of brushes their feet coming out. Microfiber bath mats can be good for that.

In addition to a regular litter mat I use a microfibre bobble bath mat in the doorway. You can wash them frequently and they do stop litter escaping.
