Updated April 2026·Experts: slickdeals.net, The Spruce, Good Housekeeping · Community: Tools (wpmason), Tools (Asatmaya), Tools (LukePendergrass)

Best Overall

If you're serious about home improvement, this is the kit to get. The all-brushless lineup and two large-capacity batteries make it genuinely pro-grade, and the DeWalt 20V ecosystem means you can keep expanding for years.

What holds up

  • All 5 tools are brushless for better efficiency and longer motor life
  • Two 5.0Ah batteries provide serious runtime on tough jobs
  • Includes fast charger compatible with 20V MAX and 60V FLEXVOLT batteries
  • 3-year limited warranty on all tools
  • Hammer drill features ANTI-ROTATION safety system and pivoting LED

What to know

  • Premium price, not ideal if you only need tools once or twice a year
  • Some community members note the DCF845B impact driver is not the newest model
  • Kit bag is basic; no hard case included
  • Buying piecemeal on sale can sometimes beat the bundle price
Expert verdict
It's not the cheapest cordless tool set available, but for the quality (brushless) of the tools, two larger batteries, and a bag it is a pretty good value. It's probably overkill for someone living in an apartment or who doesn't want to build stuff, but if you want to serious home improvement work, it's what you'd want.

About $99 a tool is a 'good' price, i've built up a collection of the 20v xr tools buying only when they hit close to that price. I dont see the circular going that cheap too often. Batteries included even this out.

Dewalt's warranty service is great. Can't go wrong with either XR driver (887 or 845) or the Atomic one (850) that is a beast for its size.

Most of my stuff is DeWalt 20V XR, with some Milwaukee M12 stuff. The top 3 are generally accepted as DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Makita, with Ridgid just a step below, although I consider DeWalt to be overall superior.

Best Budget Power Tool Kit

For light-to-medium DIY work, Ryobi's ONE+ ecosystem is unbeatable value. You're not getting pro-grade power, but the sheer breadth of compatible tools means you'll never need to buy a second battery platform.

What holds up

  • Six tools included: drill, impact driver, recip saw, circular saw, multi-tool, and work light
  • ONE+ platform compatible with 300+ Ryobi cordless products
  • Includes both 1.5Ah and 4Ah batteries for flexibility
  • 3-year manufacturer's warranty
  • Significantly lower price than DeWalt or Milwaukee equivalents

What to know

  • Best suited for light to medium-duty jobs, not for heavy construction
  • Brushed motors (not brushless) on most tools reduce efficiency vs. premium kits
  • Battery platform not compatible with Ryobi 40V outdoor tools
  • Customer service has been reported as difficult to reach by some users
Expert verdict
The kit includes six popular power tools, two batteries, a charger, a bag, and several accessories, everything you need for a solid at-home workshop. Because the tools are all part of the brand's One+ platform, you can use the same batteries in all of them, as well as in other Ryobi One+ tools.

Our experts like the breadth of Ryobi's battery platform, which allows the same battery pack to be used across multiple tools, from jig saws to an inflator for tires and pool floats. The brand's 18V ONE+ line has more than 280 products in all.

Ryobi, Ridgid, or others may be a better fit for you. Buying DeWalt would be a 1 ton pickup for his freeway work commute. Get a Chevy Cruz and enjoy the 30MPG and extra $50k in your bank account.

Best for Professionals

If you're going into the trades or doing heavy-duty work, Milwaukee is the answer. The M18 FUEL tools hit harder, the battery ecosystem is massive, and the specialty tool selection, especially for electrical and plumbing, is unmatched by any other brand.

What holds up

  • FUEL brushless motors deliver best-in-class power for 18V tools
  • Widest range of specialty cordless tools (ratchets, pipe cutters, cable cutters, etc.)
  • M12 and M18 platforms cover compact and full-size needs
  • Extremely popular among electricians, plumbers, and GCs
  • Strong warranty and dealer service network

What to know

  • Premium pricing, often more expensive than DeWalt equivalents
  • Battery drain can be faster than DeWalt on some tools per Reddit users
  • M12 and M18 batteries are not cross-compatible
  • Less focused on carpentry/framing compared to DeWalt
Expert verdict
Metalworkers love Milwaukee, folks in the trades tend to be fiercely brand loyal, but even they agree that most tool brands excel in certain categories.

As a contractor and tradesman over the last 40 years I started with the Makita 9.6 volt stuff then moved to DeWalt and finally ended up with Milwaukee about 15 years ago with their V18 series. I currently own about 50 Milwaukee M18 and M12 tools and couldn't be happier.

Milwaukee leans more towards plumbers and electricians with their tool range while Dewalt is more focused on general construction.

Best for New Homeowners

Craftsman is the sweet spot between budget Ryobi and premium DeWalt. The V20 platform is solid, the tools perform well for typical homeowner tasks, and you can find it at Lowe's without hunting for deals.

What holds up

  • Four essential tools cover the vast majority of homeowner tasks
  • Includes two batteries and charger, ready to use out of the box
  • Lifetime warranty on hand tools; 3-year on power tools
  • Available at Lowe's for easy in-store pickup and returns
  • Competitive pricing, often on sale under $200

What to know

  • V20 platform less expansive than DeWalt 20V or Milwaukee M18 ecosystems
  • Some Reddit users report quality has declined since Stanley Black & Decker acquisition
  • Brushed motors on base models reduce longevity vs. brushless alternatives
  • Task light less useful than a circular saw for serious projects
Expert verdict
This combo kit of top-quality equipment will help you manage an enormous range of projects. In addition to a drill, you get an impact driver, a variable-speed reciprocating saw with a 6-inch blade, and a powerful task light, along with two batteries, a battery charger, and a sturdy storage bag.

You might even see professional contractors walking out with a Craftsman, its tools sometimes perform as well as their professional-grade competitors in Popular Mechanics tests.

My early 2000s Craftsman starter set is still the heart of my tool collection. I don't use the ratchets anymore, and I've bought many other things to augment, but those are still my go-to sockets and wrenches.

Don't spend the cheese on Craftsman, I gave one of there new ratchets a go a few months ago and it broke day one. The quality just is not there anymore.

Best Hand Tool Combo Kit

Not everyone needs power tools, and for hanging pictures, assembling furniture, and basic repairs, this Stanley kit is all you need. It's the one kit every home should have before buying anything else.

What holds up

  • Well-constructed 16-foot tape measure that opens and retracts smoothly
  • Compact, lightweight hard-shell carrying case easy to transport
  • Includes level, useful for hanging shelves and installing appliances
  • Excellent value for the quality and range of tools provided
  • Tested and recommended by Good Housekeeping Institute

What to know

  • Not suitable for heavy-duty home renovation projects
  • No cordless drill included, power tool users need to supplement
  • 65 pieces may feel limited for advanced DIYers
  • Hammer weight may be insufficient for framing or heavy driving tasks
Expert verdict
Our experts called it the 'Goldilocks of tool sets', it includes everything needed for most basic tasks, yet also not large enough to be overwhelming or take up tons of storage. Testers particularly liked the quality of the 16-foot tape measure, which opens and retracts smoothly compared to the tape measures often found in cheaper sets.

Through years of tool testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute, Stanley has earned an excellent reputation for quality and reliability, and it shows again here with this 65-piece kit. An excellent combination of value and performance.

This is not what you asked, but tbh I've never been impressed by any 'complete' tool set. You end up paying for things you never use and having to buy critical things that aren't included. My suggestion is to figure out what tools you need and buy them separately.
