The Best Unscented Cat Litters

Updated April 2026·Experts: Good Housekeeping, WIRED · Community: Pets, CatAdvice, Pets (second user)

Best Overall

This is the one to buy. Vets prefer it, Good Housekeeping named it best overall after testing 25+ brands, and Reddit users with multiple cats swear by it. The 40-lb bag is heavy but lasts two months with one cat.

What holds up

  • Medium-size bentonite clay granules form hard, easy-to-scoop clumps
  • No added fragrance, vet-recommended and safe for sensitive cats
  • Works reliably with self-cleaning litter boxes like Litter-Robot
  • 40-lb bag lasts up to two months with one cat at ~52¢/lb

What to know

  • 40-lb bag is very heavy and awkward to handle
  • Some initial dust when first poured into the box
  • Not biodegradable, standard clay mining concerns apply
Expert verdict
Dr. Elsey's has no added scent, which veterinarians prefer, but I think it controlled odor well in my multiple-cat home.

Expert verdict
Most people will want to look for a low-tracking, clumping cat litter that's compatible with their litter box.

We use dr Elsys litter and it's amazing for us. I scoop daily/every other day and full clear out/clean once a week. He's 10 years old now.

I used dr elseys for years and I'm looking for a new brand because it isn't really scoopable anymore. All the litter in the box gets soggy

Best Natural/Eco-Friendly

If you want to skip clay entirely, World's Best is the community's go-to. Reddit users with multiple cats and sensitive-nosed guests consistently praise it, one owner says her mom with an 'extremely sensitive sense of smell' can't detect the litter box at all.

What holds up

  • Corn-based formula is biodegradable and flushable
  • Strong odor control praised by Reddit users with multiple cats
  • Less dust than clay, better for asthmatic owners and cats
  • Clumps well enough for easy scooping

What to know

  • More expensive than clay litters, especially outside the US
  • Litter becomes fine over time and tracks more as it breaks down
  • Soft clumps can break apart during scooping
  • Some Reddit users report quality has declined in recent years

I swear by world's best. It's expensive, but so freaking worth it. We have two cats and two litter boxes, one of which is under our big table in the living room. When my mom comes over, who has an EXTREMELY sensitive sense of smell, has no idea it's there.

I also swear by World's Best. Expensive but lasts longer (still scooping regularly).

Best Low-Tracking

If you're constantly sweeping litter off your floors, switch to Tidy Feet. The larger granule design is a genuine engineering solution to tracking, and the unscented version with activated charcoal handles odor without fake fragrance.

What holds up

  • Larger, specially shaped granules engineered to resist sticking to paws
  • Low dust compared to fine-grain clay litters
  • Activated charcoal for odor control without added scent
  • Earned Good Housekeeping Seal in both scented and unscented versions

What to know

  • Pricier than standard clay at ~77¢/lb
  • Larger granules may not suit cats with very sensitive paws
  • Some Reddit users report inconsistent odor control compared to other brands
Expert verdict
The larger pellets also make for less dust, reviewers report. Some express concern that cats with sensitive paws might not like it, but in my review, my cats took to it just fine.

I do use the regular Tidy Cats 24/7 litter and it works great. Avoid the lightweight stuff.

I use the regular kind of Tidy Cats 24/7 performance litter (not the lightweight kind) and it works really well. Haven't had any serious problems with it. I have an LR4 and three cats.

Best Budget

If budget is the priority, Special Kitty is the honest answer. It won't outperform Dr. Elsey's on clumping tightness, but at 48¢/lb in a recyclable jug, it's the pick for multi-cat households watching their spending.

What holds up

  • Cheapest unscented option at ~48¢/lb in a convenient 14-lb jug
  • Bentonite clay clumps adequately for daily scooping
  • Easy-pour jug design with recyclable packaging
  • Unscented formula works for multi-cat households per online reviewers

What to know

  • Clumps not as tight as premium options, can break apart during scooping
  • Tracks more than larger-granule litters
  • Walmart exclusive, not available at other retailers
  • Some users report odor control falls short with multiple cats
Expert verdict
If you're looking to keep costs low, prefer a 14-pound jug to a bag or box weighing 20 pounds or more, and don't mind the occasional sweep around the litter box to pick up a few tracked granules, this Walmart exclusive has a low price and is easy to use.

I was using one of the cheapest litters I could find (Special Kitty), but no matter how often I cleaned, the smell wafted throughout the whole house. So I switched to Tidy Cats.

Best Unscented Alternative (Non-Clay)

Wood pellets are the sleeper pick that Reddit keeps recommending. They're cheap in bulk, produce almost no dust (huge for asthmatic owners), and pine's natural scent neutralizes urine smell without any added fragrance. The catch: no clumping, so you scoop solids and let pellets do the rest.

What holds up

  • Natural pine scent neutralizes ammonia odor without artificial fragrance
  • Virtually no dust, ideal for asthmatic owners and cats
  • Biodegradable and low-tracking compared to fine clay
  • Extremely cheap in bulk, ~$8 for 40 lbs at farm supply stores

What to know

  • Non-clumping, requires a different scooping method and special two-layer sifting box
  • Poop odor not well-masked; needs immediate scooping
  • Strong natural pine smell may not suit all owners or cats
  • Needs more frequent full changes than clumping clay
Expert verdict
Paper or wood pellets: Cheap; low dust and tracking; biodegradable

I use wood pellets! My cat is a former feral failed barn cat and it's the only litter she's ever used. When she pees it smells like fresh cut wood. It doesn't cover up the poop smell very well, but I just scoop right away. It doesn't clump, but it also doesn't really track which is nice.

Add to that im asthmatic so cannot imagine the particulate matter from clay litter etc. I immediately switched to pine and never looking back unless my cat needs something else.
