Actual Budget vs Buddy

Actual Budget is built around zero-based budgeting — every dollar gets a job, and the app enforces that discipline the same way YNAB does. Buddy tracks your spending, which is useful, but it doesn't push you toward a budgeting method. That distinction sounds abstract until month three, when Actual users are catching overspending before it happens and Buddy users are reviewing it after.

Actual Budget has inherited a vocal, experienced community of YNAB refugees who produce tutorials, migration guides, and troubleshooting threads constantly. Buddy's community is small and quiet by comparison. When you hit a confusing edge case — and you will — Actual's community has almost certainly already solved it. With Buddy, you're largely on your own.

Actual Budget can be self-hosted, meaning your financial data lives on your own server, not a company's. For anyone who's uncomfortable with a startup holding years of transaction history, this is a genuine differentiator. Buddy is a standard cloud app — convenient, but you're trusting their infrastructure and their business model to stay alive.

Buddy handles the basics well enough, but it explicitly lacks advanced reporting and analytics. That's fine for month one. By month six, when you want to see spending trends across categories, net worth tracking, or year-over-year comparisons, Buddy has nothing to offer. Actual Budget isn't perfect on reporting either, but it's in a different league and actively improving.
