Best Three-Row Family EVKia EV9

Kia EV9

$56,000-$80,000

If you need three rows and want to go electric without spending Rivian money, the EV9 is the obvious answer. Nothing else in this price range comes close for family hauling.

What holds up

  • Genuine 7-seat capacity with 42+ inches of rear legroom, beats Cadillac Escalade
  • 800V architecture charges 10-80% in ~24 minutes at 350kW DC charger
  • V2L bidirectional power works during home outages, camping, and tailgating
  • Low step-in height makes car seat installation and kid loading easy
  • Bold design with premium interior, minimal cheap plastic

What to know

  • Starting at $56,395, pricier than gas equivalents like the Telluride
  • Not currently eligible for $7,500 federal EV tax credit (US-built version in progress)
  • Frunk is too small for anything except the charging cable
  • Haptic feedback buttons on dashboard require eyes-off-road to operate
Expert verdict
With over 42 inches of rear legroom, the EV9 tops the Cadillac Escalade, Range Rover P400, and Mercedes EQS. It also has more shoulder and legroom than the Tesla Model X.

Expert verdict
Kia's three-row EV9 is one of our favorite family-friendly electric vehicles, impressing from the moment I opened the door with its low step-in and load-in height, making it ideal for parents installing car seats, kids getting in and out or for anyone loading groceries or cargo into the rear hatch.

I just hit the car show and the Kia EV9 really stood out for awesome leg room for both passengers and driver (if at the expense of some cargo room).

Best Overall ValueTesla Model Y

Tesla Model Y

$44,000-$60,000

For most families who don't need a third row, the Model Y is still the smartest buy, the Supercharger network alone makes road trips dramatically less stressful than any competitor.

What holds up

  • 330 miles of range, tops in its class for the money
  • Native access to Tesla Supercharger network, no adapters, no hassle on road trips
  • Most energy-efficient SUV on the market at 3.85 mi/kWh
  • Eligible for $7,500 federal EV tax credit, bringing effective price under $40K
  • Optional 7-seat configuration available

What to know

  • Reputation for inconsistent build quality and panel gaps
  • Optional third row is extremely cramped, not practical for adults
  • Enhanced Autopilot and FSD are expensive add-ons with controversial safety records
  • Minimalist interior with almost no physical buttons
Expert verdict
The Model Y is one of the most affordable EVs in its class even before accounting for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit and the energy most efficient SUV on this list at 3.85 miles per kilowatt-hour making it a tough act to follow for frugal shoppers.

Expert verdict
The Rivian R1S remains our Editors' Choice winner because of its longer driving range and more powerful performance, though it comes at a much higher starting price ($74,900). If you need three rows of seating and want to keep the cost down to earth, the Kia EV9 is a worthwhile, value-minded alternative.

We have a 1 year old and we want another kid someday. So, we'd like a bigger car, but not a BIG car.

Best for Adventure FamiliesRivian R1S

Rivian R1S

$75,000-$110,000+

If your family camps, tows, or just wants the most capable EV money can buy, the R1S has no real competition. The price is steep, but you're getting something no other EV offers.

  • 15 inches of ground clearance with 35.8-degree approach angle for serious off-road use
  • Three rows with genuinely comfortable seating for 7 adults
  • 5,000 lb towing capacity, practical for boats, trailers, and campers
  • Unique camping and surveillance modes; detachable Bluetooth speaker built in

What to know

  • Starting at $74,900, significantly more expensive than Kia EV9
  • No Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, proprietary infotainment only
  • Noisy suspension on rough roads
  • All-terrain package reduces range by 10-15%
Expert verdict
Rivian's all-electric R1S SUV builds on the success of the R1T pickup with extensive battery range, nimble handling, a comfortable, three-row interior, and ample cargo space... the Rivian R1S is nonetheless an ideal people hauler for busy families and our Editors' Choice winner for electric SUVs.

Expert verdict
With a 35.8-degree approach, 29.6-degree breakover, and 34.4-degree departure angle, plus an impressive 15 inches of ground clearance, it shrugged off some tricky sections where pitch and roll became rather excessive.

Best Everyday Family EVHyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai Ioniq 5

$43,000-$60,000

For families who want a practical daily driver with genuinely fast charging and a roomy back seat for car seats, the Ioniq 5 is the sweet spot, just be aware of the ICCU reliability issues on pre-2025 models.

What holds up

  • 800V architecture enables extremely fast charging, comparable to Kia EV9
  • Flat floor and sliding second row make car seat installation and legroom flexible
  • Edmunds Top Rated Electric SUV 2026, strong expert consensus
  • V2L bidirectional charging for powering devices and appliances
  • Distinctive retro design with premium interior feel

What to know

  • Known ICCU (integrated charging control unit) failure issue on pre-2025 models
  • Sloped rear window reduces cargo space compared to boxier competitors
  • Sunroof does not open on some trims
  • No wireless CarPlay on some trim levels
From the community
Electric propulsion is incredibly smooth, silent and instant. The ride isn't bad for a heavy battery vehicle and handles well enough. Great highway car, too. We've had no maintenance done except for tire rotations. Zero cost.

It's still competitive enough that I'm planning on replacing my iX with it at the end of the year. Yes, I know the major issue but I still think it's the best option in the segment. Just a good all-around package for the most part.

Best Luxury Family EVLucid Gravity

Lucid Gravity

$82,000-$142,000

If budget isn't a constraint and you want the absolute best, longest range, most cargo space, fastest charging, and a third row that adults can actually sit in, the Lucid Gravity is in a class of its own.

What holds up

  • Up to 450 miles of EPA-estimated range, more than any other family EV
  • 98 cubic feet of total cargo space rivals a minivan; 6 carry-on bags fit behind the third row
  • Doors open to 90 degrees, easiest car seat installation of any SUV tested
  • NACS port with proprietary boost tech enables up to 225kW at Tesla Superchargers
  • Panoramic moonroof spans front windshield to rear; third row sits elevated for better views

What to know

  • Starting at $81,550, significantly more expensive than Kia EV9 or Rivian R1S
  • Steep learning curve for the tech-heavy interface
  • Advanced DreamDrive 2 Pro ADAS features still rolling out via OTA updates
  • 87-inch mirror-to-mirror width makes narrow roads challenging
Expert verdict
The optional third row was one of the most comfortable I've been in. It didn't feel quite as crammed and cumbersome as third rows can be, and I loved being able to see outside the window thanks to this row being lifted higher than the second.

Expert verdict
We were able to install our massive, rotating Cybex behind the driver's seat without compromising legroom. That's something I can't say about some of the larger SUVs I tested, which could only accommodate the convertible car seat behind the passenger seat.
